Bernard Hill, the British actor who played King Théoden in 'Lord of the Rings,' dies at 79

Hill, who was also known for his roles in "Titanic" and "Gladiator," died Wednesday in London, according to his agent.

Born in Manchester, England, Hill began his acting career in the theater before making his film debut in 1971. He went on to appear in dozens of films and television shows, including "Nicholas and Alexandra," "The Bounty," and "Gandhi."

Hill's portrayal of King Théoden in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy was widely praised for its depth and humanity. He also received critical acclaim for his supporting role as Captain Smith in "Titanic." In recent years, Hill appeared in the films "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Dunkirk."

Hill was a private person who rarely gave interviews. He was married to the actress Gwen Taylor for 54 years. They had two children.
